'Tis the season to be jolly...
Here comes that time of year again and it's got me thinking about what I feel about Christmas. Bit of mixed feelings really, as I like the pressies (let's get real) but I'm sick of all the fuss and fake. So here's my top 6 of what I like, and don't like about Christmas. Why 6?...Why not.6 things I like:
1- Fairytale of New York by the Pogues playing over and over again in shops, radio, etc...
"And the boys of the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out for Christmas day"
2- Opening presents. The thrill of discovering what's behind the wrapping is priceless.
3- The streets lit up and fancy shop windows
4- Seeing the extended family once a year
5- Classic films on TV to watch all cosied up on the couch with the loved one, in front of the fire.
6- Christmas food!! (the French version of it... to my standards, Irish Brussels Sprouts do not qualify as Christmas food).
6 things I don't like:
1- Christmas starting in October or November. No mention of Christmas should be allowed before Dec. 1st
2- Marketing and advertising: where every product becomes a "great idea for Christmas", from mobile phone to razor blades. I wouldn't be surprised if they used it for laxatives.
3- The idea that you must be happy and breezy just because it's X-mas. I demand the right to be in a bad mood if I'm having a shit day, especially since I'm working till the 22nd and it's very likely to happen.
4- Christmas shopping in the crowd.
5- People spending €300+ on one child and those thinking that the value of a present is reflected in the shelf price.
6- All the tackiness, peace, love, joy, God and all this. The world is mad and mean and Christmas won't change anything.
